What's Fukui About ? Tell Us About It!

Fukui Prefecture is a rather small area that can be found facing the Sea of Japan. The Prefecture is known to be an area of Japan’s ‘snow country’, which means that it often succumbs to heavy, long-lasting flurries of snow. Most of the Prefectures that line the coast of the Sea of Japan are known to be the same.

You can eat a specific type of soba dish called Oroshi Soba in Fukui Prefecture. It is very similar to Zaru Soba in that it is cold, and perfect for a hot summer’s day. The only difference is that it comes with various toppings, including a wide variety of fresh vegetables.

If you travel to Fukui City and walk along the side of Asuwa River in the spring, then you will more than likely be surrounded by a boulevard of cherry blossom trees at their peak. It is considered to be one of the most scenic walks in the city, and it is relatively easy to get to with two nearby stations. During the spring it becomes a blooming hanami spot, which means ‘flower viewing’.

By venturing to the far North of Fukui City you will find Maruoka Castle. This castle is rather unique because it is one of the last twelve castles in the country that have managed to survive the post-feudal ages with their actual castle keeps intact. The relatively small keep is actually considered to be one of the oldest in the country, and it has some rather unusual features. These features include a hidden level that is completely invisible to people outside.

You can find the Awara Hot Spring Water Splashing Festival occurring on the 8th and the 9th of August on a yearly basis. It happens throughout the entire Awara hot spring resort area. People splash the hot spring water directly onto a portable shrine that is carried by people in costumes throughout the whole area. The portable shrine is even carried through the local inns, and in the shopping areas.
