What's Yamaguchi About ? Tell Us About It!

Yamaguchi Prefecture can be found towards the West of Honshu, with Shimane Prefecture and Hiroshima Prefecture to the East. The region also shares a stunning coastline with the Sea of Japan. You can find the longest limestone cave in Yamaguchi Prefecture, called The Akiyoshido, it spans a distance of 9km.

The region is famous for Kawara Soba, otherwise known as Hot Tile Noodles. The dish consists of fried green tea noodles that have been placed on a hot tile, the noodles are then covered with a variety of toppings. It is a really popular dish during the colder months of the year, just be careful not to burn your hands.

Akiyoshidai is a mining city that can be found in Yamaguchi Prefecture, and it is the home to Akiyoshido, the longest limestone cave in Japan. The area itself is dotted with a number of limestone pinnacles, a type of formation that rarely occurs in other areas of Japan. The formations have occurred due to the past of the area, as 300 years ago the plateau would have been a coral reef. The stunning geological formations are the result of the limestone breaking down over centuries.

You can also find a Buddhist Temple called Rurikoji Temple in Yamaguchi City, the capital of the Prefecture. It has an amazing five-story pagoda, one that is often referred to as the greatest five-story pagoda in Japan. People travel to the area to see the temple, and to see Kozan Park. Surrounding the temple, you can find a hall, a storehouse, a historical bell tower, and a small museum that hosts an array of pictures and models of the other 5-story pagodas that can be found across Japan.

If you want to experience the historical side of Japan away from all of the main tourism locations, then you should visit Hagi. The small coastal town lies next to the Sea of Japan, and it dates all the way back to the 17th century. There is a lot of history and culture to be found there. It even features preserved storehouses, and traditional Namako style walls.
